SIGNS AND SEALS OF THE COVENANT, C.G. Kirkby

A Biblical review of the Doctrine of Christian Baptism. Most paedobaptists and baptists are unaware of the basis for this practice. Most paedobaptists do not know the reasons for it and do not know how to answer the objections of baptists, who consequently assume that there is no biblical basis for it at all. This book (as well as John Legg's booklet above) show that biblical paedobaptists do not need to be ashamed of their practice and can defend it from the Bible. Baptists would do well to read it in order to discover that their paedobaptist brethren base their beliefs about baptism on the teachings of the Scriptures and not tradition.

CHRISTIAN FELLOWSHIP or
THE CHURCH MEMBER'S GUIDE

John Angell James
Published by Quinta Press

James was the minister of Carr's Lane Congregational Church, Birmingham. He wrote this book to encourage his members and fellow believers to act towards each other in a biblical manner. Issues dealt with are relations of members to their pastors, to each others and to members of other churches. This edition has been edited and abridged in modern language making it more accessible to modern readers (references to church members' treatment of their domestic servants has been removed!). This little guide would be ideal for churches to study together and seek to help each other to put the principles contained herein (which the author believes to be biblical).

Why not ... this coming autumn study this book together in your church, with a view to improving the quality of church life? This attractively produced booklet will prove a first class guide. Its study could revolutionise your church's life, and give new vision for the future.

MANUAL OF CONGREGATIONAL PRINCIPLES

R.W. Dale
Published by Quinta Press

Dale was the minister of Carr's Lane Congregational Church, Birmingham (co-pastor and then successor to John Angell James), and wrote this Manual in 1884. It has become the clearest statement of Congregational principles of church government. Congregationalists should read this book to discover why their churches are organised as they are and members of churches of a different order should read this to discover why Congregationalists organise their churches as they do. Baptists will find much to agree with. Anglicans/Episcopalians will discover (in a lengthy appendix based on the work of Bishop Lightfoot) why Congregationalists consider the episcopal system system of church government to be unbiblical and the congregational system to be that of the New Testament church.

Two things spoil Dale's work. His belief in "Christian Universalism" and his belief in indiscriminate baptism. A new appendix shows up these errors and points to the true Congregational view.

THE ATONEMENT

R.W. Dale
Published by Quinta Press

One of the classic works on the Atonement, Dale's book has been very influential over the years. His aim is to discover what the Bible has to say on the subject and shows that then current views (which are still held by many today) have no basis in Scripture. Jesus did not die merely as an example of self-giving love but as a sacrifice for the sins of guilty sinners to make them acceptable to God.

This was one of the volumes read by Dr Martyn Lloyd-Jones in 1929 which directed him towards the significance of the Cross of Christ in Gospel preaching.
